There are many themes that pop up with my parent coaching and therapy clients and one of those themes is that humans often, if not all the time, conflate worry with care. We might have the story “If I don’t worry about (insert the person/thing), I don’t really care”. Worry can also be a “squirrel” and distract us from caring for ourselves. If we are too busy worrying about other things then we don’t have to pay attention to our own shit - the feelings we need to practice feeling and the compassion we need to offer ourselves.
Instead, we can practice I Believe In You Energy, which is more joyful and connecting than worry energy. Here’s why we want to make that shift, especially if we are parents…If we are feeling worry (also a form of anxiety) then the people we are in relationship (like our kids) experience that too and if they are struggling in any way, that is an added burden they don’t need!
I Believe In You Energy isn’t toxic positivity - It’s community care and mutual aid. It communicates support and love to people you support and love! It’s more empowering than worry and soothes the nervous system so we can develop the skills and increase our will and capacity to navigate the trickiest of life things.
So take a moment to identify something or someone you’re worried about and consider how that may be unhelpful because of how your worry is impacting your thoughts, feelings and behavior toward that person. Are you micro managing your team because you’re worried about a deadline? Are you helicoptering in your parenting because your kiddo is struggling to make friends? Now make a conscious choice to send them I Believe In You/Us Energy and experience the difference in your body. It’s softer, more connecting and solution focused. You may feel more energized to actually navigate the tricky things alongside people you care about instead of feeling overwhelmed, drained, helpless and more.
